Goodnight, Moon

I don’t know what it is, but there’s something extra special about the moon in the city. For me, there are few things better than walking down the street, surrounded by tall buildings and bright lights, to look up and see it hovering there.

Tonight, for the first time in Hong Kong, I noticed the moon as I was walking home from work.

There's one thing slightly better than seeing it: having the photos turn out.

Lagging behind

From Day 1, I’ve had grand plans for this blog. And none have really materialized.

At first, it was because I had nothing exciting enough to live up to the name. (Or so I told myself.) And so, for a year and a half, my empty page languished on the Interwebs.

I thought getting a job in Hong Kong would be the kick in the pants I needed – indeed, two very good friends said they wouldn’t allow me to leave Dallas unless I started blogging.

I planned to post something before I left the country. A few photos of the apartment, empty of everything that had marked it as mine. Concerns about moving to Asia. Tales of flying business class. But in the flurry of packing and saying goodbye and moving halfway round the world, the blog once again got pushed to the side.

I told myself I would post as soon as I got to Hong Kong.

And then, I got sucker-punched by jet lag.

I travel a lot, but I’ve never really been affected by jet lag before. Granted, the time change has been shorter than it is this time. But even on my last trip to Hong Kong, it wasn't horrible. I got a bit sleepy in the afternoon, was ready to go to bed at 11 p.m. and was rarin’ to go by 6 the next morning. It’s not my usual timetable, but at least I was able to sleep through the night.

This time, it’s been a different story. For the first week, I rarely got more than four hours of sleep together. Sometime over the weekend, my internal clock shifted, and now I can’t get enough sleep. Two days in a row now, I’ve awoken in barely enough time to throw on clothes and run off to work.

My only reasoning is that I went from not having a routine at home to not having a routine here. Factor in sleep deprivation for the two weeks before I left… I think it all adds up to serious jet lag.

So, despite all the pressure from friends back in the States, I’ve put off the blog because I was too tired to sit, much less form complete sentences.

That stops now.

I’m not promising to post every day, but if I can get something up, say, a few times a month, I’ll consider myself in good shape.

Don’t you agree?
